“I can’t tell you how this has changed my life” Tom Daniels, TLC Eyecare and Laser Centers True Custom LASIK patient.

What Can LASIK Do For Me?

Many people have vision that is so poor that they cannot function without their glasses or contacts. This becomes a problem when glasses or contacts don’t mesh with the activities the wearer wants to engage in.

Glasses fog up on the racquetball or indoor tennis court. Wind blows debris into contacts when biking or jogging. Glasses continuously slip down a sweat-soaked face. Swimming may not even be possible.

And it's not just sports activities that are affected. Heat and air conditioning can dry contacts and make them uncomfortable or fall out of the eyes. Simply reading the alarm clock in the morning can be an impossible task without first reaching for the glasses or contacts.

Some people need their glasses or contacts for limited tasks, but they can still be a nuisance. Glasses get broken, lost, or forgotten. Contacts rip or infect the eyes.

If the above paragraphs describe you, consider LASIK, the most widely performed elective surgical procedure in the world. LASIK can free you from dependence on glasses or contacts.

LASIK (short for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is the most technologically advanced procedure available for reducing or eliminating refractive errors, which cause blurred vision. Refractive errors are commonly known as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Before LASIK, people relied on glasses or contacts to correct refractive errors. Now after a LASIK procedure, most people no longer need glasses or contacts, or need them in a greatly reduced prescription and only for certain activities. Most LASIK patients are thrilled with the results.

Why do Refractive Errors Result in Blurred Vision?

Refractive errors occur when the cornea does not focus light correctly on the retina. The cornea is the clear outer dome of the eye.

How the Eye Works

For someone with 20/20 vision, light passes through the cornea and the cornea focuses this light on the back of the eye known as the retina. The retina then sends the image to the brain and the brain interprets the image. This interpretation is what the person sees.

For someone with a refractive error, the cornea doesn’t focus the light correctly on the retina. Therefore, the image the retina sends to the brain is blurred. Because it’s the cornea and not the brain that is responsible for focusing the image, the image the brain interprets is blurred. Consequently, the image the person sees is blurred.

Types of Refractive Errors

There are three types of refractive errors.

  • People with myopia, or nearsightedness, have trouble seeing distant objects clearly.
  • People with hyperopia, or farsightedness, can’t see near objects as clearly as distant objects.
  • Astigmatism is a distortion of the image that occurs regardless of whether the image is near or far.

These refractive errors are known as lower-order aberrations. It is quite common for nearsighted and farsighted people to also have some degree of astigmatism. Glasses and contacts compensate for the cornea’s inability to focus correctly, and correct these lower-order aberrations. LASIK also changes the focusing ability of the cornea, only this change is permanent.
